To be sown around the edges of cultivated fields, between the productive part of the field and an existing feature or habitat. It will provide protection for existing and creation of new habitats. It will also form habitat networks for small mammals, invertebrates and birds by creating links or corridors between sites. If next to a watercourse it will also prevent pollutants such as fertilisers from being transported in surface water runoff.
